From Chicago to Condado: A Sunrise Surprise Proposal in San Juan, Puerto Rico
When Love Lands in San Juan
Some love stories start in the most unexpected places.
Dominic and Kristen met at a work offsite in Austin, Texas. She was living in Hoboken. He was in Chicago. For over a year, they built something real across the distance. Then she moved to Chicago, and Dominic started planning something even bigger.
He reached out to me in January with one goal: propose to Kristen during their company's annual offsite in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
He knew she loved beaches. He knew she loved sunsets. And he trusted me to help him document the moment she said yes.
That kind of trust is something I never take lightly.
Why San Juan Was the Perfect Setting
Dominic had visited Puerto Rico the previous summer and fell in love with the island, just like Kristen did. He wanted the proposal to happen somewhere that already held meaning for them.
San Juan delivers in ways that few destinations can.
Within minutes of each other, you have:
- Soft, golden beaches along the Atlantic coast
- A dramatic city skyline and the iconic Condado neighborhood
- 500 years of colonial architecture in Old San Juan
- Weather that, on a good morning, produces the kind of light photographers dream about
They were staying at the Marriott Stellaris Resort in Condado. That placed them right at the edge of the Atlantic, which made the entire session incredibly natural and connected.
The Morning of the Session
I arrived at the Marriott Stellaris at 6:40am.
The day before had been rough. Rain. Storms. The kind of weather that makes you check every forecast app available. I went to sleep that night genuinely unsure of what we would wake up to.
Then the morning came.
The clouds from the night before had not fully cleared, and that turned out to be a gift. They created what photographers call a natural softbox, diffused, even, flattering light that wraps around your subjects without any harsh shadows. It was exactly what an engagement session needs.
I met Dominic and Kristen in the hotel lobby. We walked out together, and the session began.
Documenting From Every Angle
Dominic and Kristen had selected the option to include drone footage and video clips as part of their session.
This is something I genuinely believe in.
A drone gives you angles that are physically impossible from the ground. It shows scale. It shows the relationship between two people and the world around them. When you are standing on a beach in Condado with the Atlantic stretching out behind you, that perspective matters.
A few minutes in, I launched the drone. The footage was, in a word, magical.
We then moved to a second nearby location and continued with both photos and video. The variety of spots available in Condado means you never feel stuck in one mood or one backdrop.
What Great Engagement Photos Actually Require
People often ask me what makes an engagement session work.
The answer is not the camera. It is not even the location.
It is how relaxed your clients feel.
When Dominic and Kristen mentioned at the end of the session that they felt completely at ease the entire time, that was the best feedback I could have received. Relaxed clients move naturally. They look at each other instead of the lens. They laugh without thinking about it.
That is when the real photos happen.
My job is to reduce every layer of pressure until what remains is just two people who are genuinely happy to be together. The camera is simply there to catch it.
Fast Turnaround, Real Results
Within five hours of returning from the session, Dominic and Kristen had:
- Their full gallery uploaded to a private online portal
- Three edited video clips ready to view and download
They did not have to wait days or wonder when they would see their memories. That matters, especially for clients who are traveling and want to relive the moment before they fly home.
Planning a Proposal or Engagement Session in Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico is one of the most versatile photography destinations in the Caribbean.
Whether you are imagining a sunrise on the beach, a golden hour session in the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, or a dramatic coastal cliffside, this island has options within a very short drive of each other.
If you are planning a proposal or engagement session in San Juan, here are a few things to consider:
- Location: Condado, Isla Verde, and Old San Juan each offer a completely different aesthetic. You do not have to choose just one.
- Timing: Sunrise and the hour before sunset produce the most flattering natural light year-round.
- Flexibility: Puerto Rico weather can shift quickly. Working with a photographer who can adapt in real time is not optional, it is essential.
