Engagement Session at Old San Juan: Mikaela & Sergio’s Golden Hour Adventure
There’s something magical about Old San Juan during golden hour, the cobblestone streets, pastel façades, and ocean breeze make it one of the most romantic places in Puerto Rico for engagement photos. When Sergio reached out to schedule a session for him and his fiancée, Mikaela, I knew we were going to create something special. He had already envisioned capturing the warm glow of the city just before sunset, and when I checked my calendar, the timing couldn’t have been better.
A Stroll Through the Heart of Old San Juan
Mikaela, originally from the northeast of the U.S., dreamed of combining the timeless charm of Old San Juan with the relaxed feel of a tropical beach. To bring both visions to life, they booked my 1.5-hour engagement session, perfect for couples who want a variety of locations and styles.
We began at the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro, where the soft afternoon light kissed the fortress walls and the breeze carried the sounds of the city. From there, we moved slowly through Old San Juan’s most picturesque spots: Plaza de La Rogativa, the quiet charm of Caleta de las Monjas Street, and the lively energy of Calle del Cristo. Every corner offered something unique, from rustic doors to vibrant colors that framed Mikaela and Sergio’s laughter perfectly. We ended our city stroll at Plaza del Totem Telúrico, where both of our cars waited, and the sky began to shift toward sunset.
Chasing the Sunset by the Sea
As the sun dipped lower, I suggested we head toward the beach near El Capitolio. It’s one of the closest spots to Old San Juan and usually perfect for sunset photos. But nature had other plans that day. The ocean was wild waves crashing high, the air thick with sea salt, and a golden haze hanging in the sky. It was dramatic, unpredictable, and absolutely breathtaking.
When we reached the spot, the tide was so strong that the stairs were covered in water, no sand in sight. With the sun seconds away from disappearing, we made a quick decision and drove to Playa El Escambrón. We parked, ran toward the beach, and began shooting as the waves reached our feet. Within minutes, our pants and shoes were soaked, but none of us cared. The laughter, the spontaneity, the raw beauty of that moment, it all became part of their story.
A Golden Hour We’ll Never Forget
As the sun set behind the horizon, the sky turned into an explosion of orange and pink hues, reflected across the ocean. It was one of those rare moments when everything aligns light, love, and timing. Despite the rough seas, the atmosphere that day gave us something truly extraordinary.
Mikaela and Sergio embraced every second of it. By the time we wrapped up, we were all drenched, sandy, and smiling ear to ear. I drove home with salt on my clothes but joy in my heart, the kind of fulfillment that reminds me why I love what I do.
